Marcos Canales Mayo
Software Engineer at Rakuten
About
Marcos Canales Mayo is a highly skilled and motivated Software Engineer with over 4 years of relevant experience in the field. He is currently working as a Security Champion at Rakuten, where he is responsible for ensuring the security of products in different teams. He conducts security audits, assesses vulnerabilities, and collaborates with the CyberSecurity Department to apply best practices on their products. Marcos is a perfectionist and organized person who is always willing to take on new challenges and learn technologies he has never used before. He has been programming since he was 13 years old, but it was during his studies in computer engineering at the University of Zaragoza that he developed his passion for the IT world. He is particularly interested in low-level programming and high-performance computing topics, such as parallel and distributed computing. During his academic career, he participated in several activities and was part of the IEEE Student Branch, where he learned from a multidisciplinary team formed by students of other careers. Marcos is also interested in software engineering in general, as well as the business side of companies. This led him to join the ERP team of adidas, where he contributed to modernizing developments for SAP slow-moving monolithic core systems. He brought in DevOps practices and the microservices world to improve their development processes. He also developed single-page apps for HR, Retail, and CRM back-office, which saved the customer service department $2.3M yearly. In his spare time, Marcos participates in hackathons and online challenges along with his university colleagues. His interest in this kind of event led him to found and organize his own hackathon in the University of Zaragoza, gathering 150 students coming from all around Spain. Several companies participated in the event as sponsors, adidas being the main one. Marcos has a Master's degree in Computer Science and Engineering and a Bachelor's degree in the same field from the University of Zaragoza. He has expertise in Software Engineering, Kubernetes, Kafka, Research Scientist, Microservices, DevOps, Java, Spring, MySQL, test, Javascript, CI/CD, and UI. He is always willing to learn and grow in his career.
